Do You Really Need Multiple Resumes?

Will one version of your resume cut it and get you the ultimate results that you want? In today's job market when many are working jobs very different to their degrees, if you want to remain open and be considered for other positions, one resume may not cut it. Yes, you need multiple versions of your resume if you don not want to limit your options.
I had one client that had experience in customer service, telemarketing, banking, teaching, training and retail. His banking and teaching experience wouldn't make sense on one resume, so I multiplied his resume by two (x's 2). He had two different resumes that he was able to market in two different categories and employers. He wanted to go into social work, but he was also open to obtaining a job in customer service and insurance. I put his teaching and training experience on one resume and told him to target that resume to Social Work positions. The other resume I included his customer service, banking and retail experience and told him to target that résumé to Insurance positions. Other helpful tips:
1. Think like an employer - ask yourself what would make sense to you if you were in charge of hiring. All they really care about is what you can do for them, what problem can you solve and how your experience relates to the position they now have available.
2. Keep your resume relevant, concise and to the point
3. Be open
4. It's okay to have four and five different resumes based on your experience
5. Use your transferrable skills - transferrable skills are skills, knowledge and experience that can be applied to any job from your previous experiences. Show the connection and demonstrate the connection throughout your resume. The employer is not into guess work, you will have to spell it out for them.
